Rare Brown and White Panda Could be the Result of Inbreeding

Giant pandas are rare in the wild—WWF estimates the population is around 1,600—but seeing a giant panda with brown fur instead of black is nearly unheard of. When a brown and white panda cub was discovered in China in November, it became the seventh ever observed.While it is not certain what causes the variation, new research suggests that it might be the result of inbreeding which would have serious implications for the viability of the giant panda population in the wild.

"It's time we had a debate about what is causing this because it could be telling us something very important," Tiejun Wang, a spatial ecologist at the University of Twente in Enschede, the Netherlands, explained.

Based on historical and anecdotal observations, Wang believes that the variation may be caused by a double recessive gene. If this is the case, both the mother and father of a brown-furred cub would have to posses the recessive trait.This would explain why the variation is so rare. It would also suggest that its appearance is indicative of inbreeding in the population. Wang explained:The habitat in the Qinling Mountains is seriously fragmented and the population density is very high...the brown pandas could be an indication of local inbreeding.Such inbreeding is a concern for conservationists because it leads to a population that relies on the same set of adaptations to overcome threats, increasing the probability of extinction.

Studies of the genome, too, have shown that little inbreeding has occurred among pandas. At this point, researchers said, only a careful study of gene sequences and morphology can determine whether the source of the brown panda variation is in the air, the soil, or the shrinking genetic diversity of the giant pandas.

Guam Quarter Scarcest For 2009

According to the paper today, Guam quarter which issued by the US Mint on May 26 is now the scarcest among the new 2009 designs with a total production of 42.6 million pieces. I haven't seen one yet but I am desperately looking forward to have one as an addition to my quarter collection. I am almost done collecting, I only need a couple more!

According to the source ABC News - A man went fishing in Thailand and caught a giant stingray. Thirteen (13) men helped him carried it out of the water. "Thailand capture of the massive female stingray was part of a program to tag such Maeklong River" they said. I still remember my ESL Team back in Thailand, we used to hang out beside this river and we would have fruit shakes and tried Thai food [wink]. Anyways, believe it or not the International Union for Conservation of Nature measured this huge stingray as 7 feet by 7 feet. That doesn't include the 10-foot-long poisonous tail and it weigh 771 pounds (Almost 800 lbs). Such creatures are dangerous, of course: Famed Australian TV personality Steve "Crocodile Hunter" Irwin died from a stingray barb at the Great Barrier Reef in 2006 [According to the Source].

I had a chance to talk to Mickey Beckham [the fundraiser-developer] from South Carolina during the BBQ with the board members on Wednesday (Feb 11^th). He was sharing to me about a plan of having a group from PIBC going on a mission trip to the U.S. and speak to some Churches there. KaiKai has been a great dog watcher over the Bannex. She looks tire here because I guess she was up all night guarding our territory. I remember when Ethel left, it took her almost one week to get use to me feeding her. In fact, she usually ran away from me when I try to feed her. But today it's a different story. I'm her BEST friend and honestly I love to pay attention to her on my spare time. She is a very nice dog! Unfortunately, this first purple collar she was wearing which I bought her a couple of months ago was LOST. I am assuming that someone from the neighborhood probably took it from her because it shouldn't fall off easily, so I got her another one.

Unfortunately, it is sad to see many people (non Christian) missing out the true meaning of Christmas Celebration, especially the children. The focus is obviously on Santa Clause instead of Jesus birth. People are getting more weird on the idea of celebrating Christmas. I shared with my Community Group about a skit that still stand out of my memory about a birthday boy who never receive any gifts on his day but those who attend the birthday celebration. The idea is similar to Christmas Season. We tend to gift each other and we forget what would be our gift to Jesus since it is His birthday!

Eye Exam

I finally got my eyes checked the other day [9/10/08] at the SDA Eye Clinic.
A big "THANK YOU"going out to PIBC for their generosity in taking care of my eye exam.
I also would like to thank my Supervisor - May Vigil for always there for me. She did her best in persuading people to get this done. And most of all I thank God for being my provider along the way and for more to come!
Some of you already know that I noticed watery eyes and a growth on both of my eyes.

Exam: The uncorrected visual acuity in the right eyes is 20/25. The left eye sees 20/30 without correction. Well the result was not that bad, it just irritating sometimes.

The doctor have declared that the tissue growth won't cause me to go blind so far but I was told how to protect it from growing.
Pinguecula is the name of this type of growth in the eyes.

I was given a mild prescription. This glasses may help me to be more efficient. I will return for follow -up in about one year.

So that's a big PRAISE! I thank God that it is not something really serious!

During the gathering at Zion Fellowship Church down in Tamuning 8/10, unfortunately Ethel lost Mel's cell phone. But she didn't realize till the next day morning. It bothered her big time of course! She looked it up almost everywhere to the very point where we had to drive down back to the Church. We couldn't find it anywhere in there. As we hit back to the Campus, somehow she felt that the last place to search would be her car, by looking from outside in, she thought she show something like a cell phone in the front seat, when she opened up the door, it was NOTHING. She totally gave up & was about to leave the car, there surprisingly, she finally find the cell phone right in the back seat of her car. She still confuse of how did the cell phone ended up at the back seat! She don't remember her putting it there... Anyways, it was lost & found! [Big Praise]

This is the family that I stayed with in Palau. I strongly thank God for the opportunity He gave me to be part of this family. They're nice and supportive people. It was such a big blessing being with them. This was my last day with them so they took me on an island tour. We enjoyed our time together. I also spent time with the wife doing a little Bible Study & Prayer at the house after the kids get to bed. This is their beautiful house! I also got a chance to spend time with the kids and get to know them. I taught some kids songs & actions songs to them. We also pray together at the table before their meals. It was wonderful, I enjoyed being around with them.

I was also blessed by this guy (my driver) who was always willing and available to drive me around. The family kindly assigned him to drive me whenever and wherever I needed to go. God did provided all my needs during my stay in Palau. On top of that God opened the door for me to shared with this guy & encouraged him in his faith. He has been searching & was exposed to many different Churches/Religions (Iglesia Ni Christo, Catholic & much more) but he stopped going to any Churches for a while until I showed up. Well, I don't blame him, he was trying to explore the truth and the real teaching about God. In fact he has to drive me to Emmaus Church every Sunday morning so he ended up coming along with me to PEC. Surprisingly, before I leave he persuaded that he will continue to attend the Service at Emmaus Evangelical Church. That's a big praise!

Viewing at Ada Funeral Home

Last night was the viewing of my cousin-in-law at Ada Funeral Home. He died at a very young age [26].
Pastor Steve ____ from Agat Church did an excellent and a touching Sermon at the end of the Viewing Service. If you will, please include my cousin in your prayer. She is going through a tough time right now. She still adjusting to accept the reality. "Everything is going to be totally different with her now that her other part is missing", she sadly said. She has to manage to raise her children alone which is NOT easy. In fact, they have a one year old boy and two months unborn baby. This death of our loss reminds me that "Life can be that short even when you do not expect." It is an AWAKE CALL for me to evaluate myself of where I am in my destiny and most of all how am I doing with God?
Ecc. 3 ~A Time for Everything~ "There is a time to be born and a time to die" I have learned how important to breath with God everyday, Walk with Him until our turn to see Him. If we will be well prepared to meet God face to face then death should not be scary to us but a happy moment.

The Bouma's Arrival

Right now we are preparing to go meet the Boumas at the airport. They are arriving today. There are few students who don't know them but are willing and excited to come along. I think they are coming on a right perfect time this year. As you know May Vigil (Librarian) is not here right now so it is really important to have the Bouma around since she is gone. Meeting a Stranger

Yesterday, when Ethel & I were standing on line at the bank, there was a black man behind me who openly started a conversation with me as we moved along the line. He is from Florida that's what he said. He was in the air force in Okinawa, Japan and now working in the Continental as a mechanic. He 's been working here on Guam for more than 10 years and interestingly we figured out that he happened to know my father who also used to work at the continental here as a mechanic too. I don't know if this is a fact, there is no evidential proof to this. However, this man wanted to be my friend after we found out that my dad used to be his co-worker. He told me how expensive the flights are & that he is willing to let me use his buddy pass if I need to. He kindly asked for my e-mail address to check if I will need help. During our conversation, there were TWO voices spoken to me. * The first voice negatively said, "Do not trust any stranger, this man is trying to get you & destroy you." *The second voice positively said, "This is a good opportunity & this man could be an angel sent from God to be one of your supporters for Palau Mission Trip since he offered his buddy pass to you."
I've been worried about the cost for this trip because I haven't really saved a lot so far.
After I finished deposit, the man called me to the waiting area. Again, those two same voices were wrestling through my mind but the positive voice become stronger this time saying " Common' take this opportunity, why don't you give out one of your support letter to him?" So I finally pulled one of my brochure & gave it to him. After he saw the total cost ($800.00), he said "I'll try to support you either having you use my buddy pass or give you some money." He gave me his phone # and e-mail add. I'M CONFUSE! What you think?

OUR TEAM VISION: Our team will be participating in a variety of ministries throughout June. These includes a Youth Rally and Youth Camp, a Children's Day, Village Evangelism, Music, and Drama. Our team will also participate in Palau's Gospel Day Celebration, which remembers the arrival of the gospel to Palau seventy-nine years ago. We will be in Palau from June 9 through July 3. Although we will be staying in Koror, we will be traveling to many of the villages presenting ministry and inviting people to the Gospel Day celebration in Koror during the last week of June. On behalf of my team, we kindly ask for support in prayer and giving. We are confident that God alone is the One who speaks to the hearts of people to give to those who are in need. I have to apologize for using these pictures from some of the PIBC bloggers (smile). Unfortunately my digital camera broke during our (Shadrach) night, so I definitely cannot upload all the pictures from PIBC Day that I took. Yeah, that is why I'm like so behind in posting :-(
Each team did a very good job in the decoration and beautified the classroom, very creative & well done! Not to be bragging but I was really touched by the Shadrach (my team) decoration. It absolutely gave a clear picture of what really happen back then with those three men (Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego), where they had to stand their ground even when the world they were in was corrupt.

MESHACH

The theme for PIBC Day this year is "Stand Your Ground" Three short lil' words. Right on point! I wonder which brain among the STUCO fellow did this idea derive from. I was moved by all the messages that was given based on this theme ~Stand Your Ground~ It really fits the PIBC folks, we hear the word mostly everyday but do we stand our ground based on what we are learning?

This is a wonderful Church I ever attended here on Guam since after GEC. The people are nice, open and friendly with their warm welcome on every Sunday. I don't know, but it feels like a home Church to me. I even hooked up Lydia to this Church, she loves it and right now she is working with Amalia Vigil and me in the Children's Church for this whole month.

This is our Bible Study Class. Mohamed H. [left] is our teacher. Unexpectedly, there were three students (Matz, Paris & John) from Martha Puckett's class who joined us this morning. We had a great time in our discussion. Unfortunately, Lydia is unseen in this picture because she had to be our photographer on this shot (smile).

Basket Ball Game @ Agana Height Gymnasium

NATIVE V.S. FAIBO

The "Native Team" is a mixture of Yapese and Kosrean. Last night Lydia and I went with our cousins to watch this game. It was a very nice and exciting game, the score was really tight. The team "Native" was the one we cheered for played against the "Faibo. Luther Pong [right in red], one of the PIBC alumni was playing on the other team (Faibo).

This is the end of the game! The "Native" won this time. As you can obviously see their happy faces. This team has been on ever since, they won a lot of games already. Hopefully, we will have them play against PIBC someday. It will be a good opportunity of ministry.

These two players here made a lot of shots tonight and Brad [the taller guy on my right] can amazingly lay up smoothly and in such a fancy way . This guy can obviously dunk. Most of his shots was awesome [impressive tone].

Chuukese Group
The Chuukese are very gifted in singing and creative in composing a lot of Christian songs. According to my observation, they are the best group among all the nationality here in PIBC that always ready to sing in their language even when they are asked last minute still they can do it very well. Unlike Yapese, we always have hard time to come up with Yapese song to sing. In fact there are really few Christian songs beside the hymn in Yapese. How sad :-(

Yapese Group: Actually this song we sang is originally from Chuuk (Chuukese song) translated in Yapese by Timothy Ruda.

Putting prices on the textbooks! Yesterday we spent the whole afternoon in the office helping Ethel to finish up all the things that needs to be done by Monday. I think that was a good exercise for me then just laying down watching t.v. yesterday ehehe .... not only that but I learned a couple of things in working with Ethel :-)

Ethel & I been spending a lot of time together since our mission trip to Thailand. We ended up staying in the same host family back in Thailand, then we also have good time in the Bannex & the Wood's house over Christmas Break. And not only that Ethel also hooked me up to their prayer meeting @ PMA which I really enjoy it. I'm trying to work it with May Vigil to work Wednesday morning this Spring so I can still attend this prayer meeting at nigh time.

I invited Dave & Kalvin to join my family fellowship on the New Year night. It went well, Kalvin shared the message & Dave gave special number. My family was very happy to meet them. Kalvin's prayer request concerning his ticket back to Guam was answered on this same night. My cousin who work for Freedom Air would like to help Kalvin travel under his body pass...so that was a big PRAISE!

Happiness Lodge said " It is typical of many Westerners to come to the islands and make the following comment: "Islanders are lazy!" And they say this for a lot of reasons:
1. They don't see productivity.
2. They see young Micronesians just hanging around.
3. They experience the fact that Micronesians are always late.
4. In a meeting, Micronesians never make up their mind.
He explained about how the two views identity. Westerners- money, job & success. Islander's perspective is having good characters (reputation).

I strongly agreed to this factual article of H.Lodge .... But what should I say, it is a learning process. The Westerners and Micronesian are both going to learn from each other. Westerners should recognize the importance of having a good characters as a part of identity. Micronesians should also set their goals high to become success educationally, get good stable job & earn big money. I was told by the Bouma that Micronesians easily give up on their goals and dreams, unfortunately many don't have any goal & dream at all. No question about it, it's obviously true, few are well educated, many have unstable jobs & more are jobless!

LiL' scary ride

Me & my sister ELi were riding this garabou & weew we thought we were going to be dumped down from the high point of the cliff as this man here was leading us there, we couldn't hold on to the garabou & we jumped down like crazy. The end of the ride made us think that we were close to loose our lives ~scary moment~
